65 Latina Moms Who Totally Didn’t Want A Dog

Remember the 50 dads who didn’t want “the damn” dogs in their lives? Those who did a complete 180 after they got one? Well, we’re here to show you that their love for the pets they claimed they never wanted can only be rivaled by moms and their feelings for the pups they swore they didn’t need, too.

One moment they’re saying they don’t want dogs in their house, and the next they’re dressing up the good boi for a family photo. Or throwing it a birthday party most children would envy. You get the idea.

If you’re thinking about bringing home a dog but aren’t sure if you are ready for taking the plunge, there are a few questions that will help you make up your mind.

Do you have the time to train and socialize a new pooch? Bringing home a dog means a huge commitment of time and patience. After all, you have to teach him the rules of your home, including potty training and safe interaction with family members or other pets. On top of that, you should have time for training sessions and adequate exercise.

Which kind of dog fits your lifestyle? If you’re a retired senior, you should probably consider looking for a laid-back companion who doesn’t need a very active owner, so a Border Collie may not be your best bet. On the other hand, if you’re an athlete searching for a running companion, you probably don’t want to bring home a Pug.

Are you financially ready to care for an animal? Dogs can put some pressure on your bank account. Make sure you’re prepared to pay for things like initial shots, spaying or neutering, preventive care, toys, food, and cleaning supplies, not to mention routine and possibly emergency veterinary care for their entire lives.

Can you commit to having a pet for the next decade or longer? Those who are afraid of commitment should be aware that owning a dog means a long-term obligation. A dog may be by your side for longer than 10 years; long after you break up with your partner.

Is everyone else in your home is on board? Talk with everyone you live with to figure out how the care will be shared. Even if it’s technically your dog, your roommates should know not to feed it table scraps or let it bark at the TV.

Does the place where you live allow dogs? Many apartments and condominiums restrict the size of the dog that residents are allowed to have (usually measured by weight), and some do not allow pets at all. Some areas also have breed bans. For example, it’s illegal in Miami-Dade County, Fla., to own an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or any dog who fits the characteristics of those breeds.

Finally, have you studied up on care and safety? Being educated on pet ownership will make your and your dog’s lives much better. Research proper nutrition, potential hazards in the home, and other things you probably aren’t even aware of yet.
